Spicy shrimp nuggets

Writer: Leen Leen

I saw on TikTok that McDonald's in Japan sells shrimp nuggets, and I had been craving them for weeks! Instead of booking a flight to Tokyo, I made them myself and saved a plane ticket. 😉

Recipe for 8–10 Nuggets

🕒 30 minutes prep + 1 hour resting time

For the Filling:

  • 100g raw shrimp (or thawed if frozen)

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 2 tbsp panko or breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • Cayenne pepper (to taste)

  • Garlic powder

  • Ginger powder

For the Coating:

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 110g flour

  • 100ml ice-cold sparkling water

  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper

  • 1 tsp paprika (for color)

  • Salt (to taste)

For Frying:

  • Neutral oil (for deep frying)

For Garnishing:

  • Furikake

  • Green onions

  • Hoisin sauce

Instructions:

✨ Prepare the filling:

  1. Add all the filling ingredients to a food processor and blend into a smooth mixture.

  2. Line a plate with parchment paper and form nugget shapes using a spoon. Place them on the plate.

  3. Freeze the nuggets for 1 hour to firm up.

✨ Prepare the batter & fry:

4. In a bowl, mix all the coating ingredients.

5. Heat oil in a pot or deep fryer to about 170°C (340°F).

6. Dip each frozen nugget into the batter and carefully lower it into the hot oil.

7. Fry for about 5 minutes until crispy and cooked through.

✨ Serve & enjoy:

8. Garnish with green onions, furikake, and drizzle with hoisin sauce.

These are crispy, flavorful, and dangerously addictive! 🤤 Enjoy!
